Dr. Van Engen started out at Iowa University graduating in 1984 with a B.S. in Pharmacy. He worked as a pharmacist for 6 years before attending veterinary school at Iowa State University. Al received his D.V.M. in 1995 and started working at Central Veterinary Clinic in 1997. He is married to his wife Sue who herself is a part-time pharmacist. They have two boys together named Nick and Matt. Nick recently graduated from ISU and is attending veterinary school at his alma mater in the fall of 2013. Matt attends Sioux Center High School. Their family has one dog, Janey, who has performed admirably as the clinic’s resident blood donor for other dogs. They live on an acreage outside of Sioux Center and have a pure bred Simmental cow-calf operation. In his free time Dr. Van Engen enjoys playing golf, showing Simmentals with his boys, and attending his kid’s activities.
